Committee Descriptions:
 

 Technical and Operations committee

The Technical and Operations Committee deals with the safety and efficiency of flights, joint maintenance programmes, standardization of equipment and the pooling of spares.

The Technical and Operations Committee advises the Executive Committee and the Secretary General on the following:

  • Safety and Security issues in the region
  • Joint activities and co-operative ventures
  • Communication, navigation and surveillance/air traffic management implementation developments
  • Environmental developments
  • Technical cooperation among airlines

Training courses focusing on safety, operations, security and maintenance

All matters pertaining to training and training facilities are handled by this Committee. The original focus for training activities was on skills training for lower level employees. The training programmes have since been expanded to include managerial courses for junior, middle and top management. The Committee has ad-hoc Sub-Committees to develop, update and standardise training syllabi for airlines.

 

It advises the Executive Committee and the Secretary General in all training matters, in particular:

  • Development on training curriculum for airlines
  • Appropriate training courses relevant to current airline needs
  • Co-operative schemes on training and human resources training
  • Standardisation of training curriculum in the region
  • Selection of appropriate instructors/facilitators for training courses
  • Selection of Joint IATF/AFRAA Courses/Seminars
  • Promotion of Training facilities in the region


Commercial commitee

The Commercial Committee handles core airline business issues of common interest to member airlines. It provides a forum where member airlines meet to develop and analyse common approaches to issues confronting them. The Committee advises the Executive Committee and the Secretary General in all commercial matters related to African air transport.

The Committee's activities include the following:

 

  • Develop business and commercial guidelines for airlines, States, regional and international organizations
  • Identify, study and recommend joint commercial projects for adoption by member airlines
  • Co-ordinate schedules, traffic and tariffs
  • Promote business relationship building through common strategic business projects and partnership such as alliances, code-sharing, franchising and investments.
  • Monitor aeropolitical developments and develop appropriate policies to meet the challenges arising from such developments

 

legal committee

The Legal Committee provides the forum for AFRAA members to develop the legal policies of the Association. It advises the Executive Committee and the Secretary General in all legal matters connected with African air transport, particularly the following:

  • analysis of current and proposed national laws, orders and regulations affecting African air transport;
  • international conventions on air laws;
  • legal problems arising out of technological and other developments in air transport;
  • insurance matters;
  • legal aspects of other matters affecting the Association, including matters arising from the other Standing Committees and ad-hoc Committees;
  • aeropolitical and regulatory development.
  • Industry Affairs

economic and finance committee

This Committee provides the forum for AFRAA members to develop financial policies connected with African air transport. It advises the Executive Committee and the Secretary General in all financial matters, in particular:

  • standardization of methods;
  • currency and exchange rules matters;
  • insurance matters : joint insurance purchases and/or self insurance projects;
  • taxation and statistical matters;
  • integrated accounting and statistical systems;
  • co-operative schemes for the prevention of fraud and theft;
  • standardization of computer programmes;
  • provide advice on the financial management of the Association, including financial and accounting matters that may be referred to it by the Executive Committee.

Information and Communication Technology Committee:

The Information Communication Technology (ICT) Committee serves as a forum for Chief Information Officers of member airlines to meet and develop policies and strategies to improve ICT support and application within member airlines. The Committee advises the Executive Committee and the Secretary General in all Information Communication Technology matters related to African air transport. The Committee's activities include, among other things, the following:

  • Follow-up developments regarding Information and CommunicationTechnology in the industry;
  • Identify and recommend aviation-related information and communication technology solutions and strategies in order to reduce cost and add value to the competitiveness of member airlines;
  • Identify mechanisms of co-operation among member airlines and with other players in the field of Information and Communication Technology;
  • Organise specialized training on ICT member airlines;
  • Advise member airlines on improvement of ICT their infrastructure and capabilities.
