TAAG Cargo Safely Transports Lions From South Africa to Nigeria via Angola

Luanda, 15 August 2026 – TAAG Angola Airlines has successfully completed a specialized live animal transport operation, carrying two adult
lions weighing approximately 200 kilograms each from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Lagos, Nigeria, via Dr. António Agostinho Neto International
Airport (NBJ) in Luanda.
The operation highlights TAAG Cargo’s ability to manage complex logistics projects, including the transportation of live animals, special cargo, and
shipments that require rigorous safety standards, detailed operational planning, and full compliance with international animal welfare regulations.
The lions began their journey in Johannesburg, where they were under the constant care and supervision of wildlife conservation specialists.
Extensive planning and dedicated handling procedures were implemented throughout the operation, including documentation, preparation,
containment, and monitoring processes. These measures ensured the animals’ safety and well-being while meeting all applicable international
requirements governing the air transport of live animals.
As part of the journey, Angola played a key role in facilitating regional logistics connectivity through the modern infrastructure of Dr. António
Agostinho Neto International Airport. In particular, the airport’s Cargo Terminal demonstrated its capability to support high-value and specialized
operations, further strengthening Angola’s position as a strategic logistics and distribution gateway for Africa.
The use of NBJ as a transit hub also underscores Luanda’s growing importance as a cargo gateway for the continent, enhancing links between
Southern, Central, and West Africa and contributing to more efficient regional and international supply chains.
The lions’ final destination is a leading zoological facility in Lagos, where they will be cared for in a secure and controlled environment. The facility
provides specialized veterinary support, experienced big-cat handlers, and purpose-built conditions designed to ensure the animals’ welfare and
continued development.
The movement was carried out aboard TAAG’s Boeing 737-800 Freighter, a dedicated cargo aircraft that forms a cornerstone of the airline’s cargo
growth strategy. The freighter provides the flexibility required to transport general freight, special cargo, high-value goods, perishables, industrial equipment, and live animals while maintaining high standards of reliability and operational efficiency.
As part of its expanding African cargo network, TAAG Cargo currently operates dedicated services to Lagos, Brazzaville, Abidjan, Accra, Kinshasa,
Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Lusaka. These routes strengthen trade and logistics connections across the continent while providing customers from a
wide range of industries with greater cargo transportation options.
This operation further demonstrates TAAG’s capability to deliver tailor-made logistics solutions and manage specialized transport requirements. It also
reflects the technical expertise of its teams and the versatility of its cargo services, whether for conventional freight, project cargo, specialized
equipment, or live animal transportation. By continuing to invest in infrastructure, network development, and
operational capabilities, TAAG reaffirms its commitment to delivering competitive logistics solutions, supporting regional economic integration,
and strengthening Angola’s role as a strategic bridge between Africa and global markets.
